Indie psychological horror title Holstin is steadily gaining attention among survival-horror fans, especially those who grew up with Resident Evil and Silent Hill. Developed by Polish studio Sonka and published by Team17, the game blends unsettling atmosphere, experimental camera work, and a distinctly Eastern European setting to deliver a modern take on classic horror design.

Set in a decaying 1990s Polish town, Holstin leans heavily into tension, mystery, and limited resources - core pillars of the survival horror genre.

Holstin release date status

As of December 2025, Holstin does not yet have a confirmed release date. However, recent developments suggest progress is accelerating. Team17 officially signed on as publisher earlier this month, providing additional funding and production support.



With a new trailer released on December 16 and continued demo updates on PC, the developers have indicated that the game’s scope has expanded. While this may extend development slightly, both studios have reiterated that more announcements are expected in the coming months.

Story and setting

Holstin takes place in Jeziorne-Kolonia, an isolated lakeside town in 1990s Poland that has been overtaken by a mysterious and grotesque presence. Players arrive in search of a missing journalist after receiving disturbing, incoherent messages.



The town itself is a central character. Buildings, wildlife, and even residents appear corrupted from within, covered in a spreading organic substance. Locals behave erratically, their sanity deteriorating as the infection grows, forcing players to navigate conversations as carefully as combat encounters.

Psychological horror gameplay

Holstin stands out through its dynamic camera system, which shifts perspectives depending on the situation:

• Third-person over-the-shoulder during combat
• First-person perspective while driving
• Additional side-scrolling and top-down elements

Combat is deliberately tense, with limited ammunition and supplies reinforcing survival-focused decision-making. Resource management plays a major role, while exploration rewards players willing to investigate the town’s darker corners.



The game uses Sonka’s proprietary 2XD Rendering technology, combining hand-drawn pixel art with real-time lighting effects to create a striking visual identity.

Characters and voice acting

Players will encounter a cast of deeply unsettling characters, many of whom are slowly losing their grip on reality. Interrogating locals and interpreting their distorted perceptions is key to uncovering the truth.

Holstin will feature full voice acting in both Polish and English, a notable inclusion for an indie horror title. The dual-language option adds authenticity to the setting, particularly for players choosing the original Polish performances.
