Marvel Rivals Season 2.5 will hit on May 30th, and it's more than a typical mid-season patch. What appeared to be a normal update with Ultron's highly anticipated debut has rapidly grown into something much larger. Due to early lore leaks and datamined hints, players are assuming that one of the most formidable heroes in Marvel—Jean Grey, also known as Phoenix—is potentially entering the battlefield, paving the way for a game-changing Season 3.
Ultron Takes Center Stage
The official headliner of Season 2.5 is Ultron, the rogue AI villain who has long haunted Marvel’s narrative universe. According to new lore, Ultron is brought back in a big way: during a climactic battle on Arakko, he infects both Hawkeye and Iron Fist with a mind-control virus. With assistance from Magneto and Winter Soldier's psychological strength, the heroes are able to shrug off Ultron's control and steal back Cerebro—just to be double-crossed by Doom 2099. But Ultron, in a pretty freaky dose of poetic justice, delivers the knockout punch to Doom, and it looks like he saves the day or doesn't.
That triumph is short-lived. The body of Doom is discovered to be a robot duplicate, triggering alarms for possibly a greater, more sinister scheme. The story gets darker still with Adam Warlock feeling the return of Knull—an ancient villain responsible for fashioning the symbiotes.
The Phoenix Force Beckons
It's this return of Knull that can potentially open up the door to Jean Grey's coming. In a "primal force of the universe," Knull's return needs a hero of similar proportions. Enter Phoenix.
Hints at Jean Grey's potential introduction have been piling up for weeks. Her name was snuck into a Marvel Rivals event page last season, and she was one of the characters featured in a gigantic pre-launch leak. Now, with some lore pointing to having to call up a hero who can stand up to cosmic-level threats, fans are interpreting between the lines—and all indications are for the Phoenix Force.
Emma Frost: A Subtle Guidepost
Coincidentally, the inclusion of Emma Frost in the latest season might not be such. The core character in X-Men lore and a regular sidekick (and nemesis) to Jean Grey, Emma's addition might be part of a slow burn bridge that connects X-Men lore directly to the return of Phoenix. If Jean Grey is coming, Emma Frost's function might just change from main character to essential bridge narrative.
What's Next for Marvel Rivals?
With Ultron's robotic rampage building and Knull waiting in the cosmic wings, Marvel Rivals is increasingly positioning itself for a seismic change. Season 2.5 is building towards what might be the most explosive season to date. If Jean Grey does make it into Season 3, it could revolutionize gameplay with Phoenix's legendary resurrection powers, fire-telekinesis, and planetary annihilation.
As fans await the 30th of May, one can be sure of one thing, Marvel Rivals is about to enter its most ambitious chapter yet.
