NEW DELHI: As he prepares to start his 13th season with
Manchester United,
Wayne Rooney's testimonial match against
Everton
at
Old Trafford
today will make history for a very different reason. Wednesday's game will be the first ever between
English Premier League teams to be streamed across the globe live on
Facebook.
An estimated global audience of 1.7 billion will be able to watch live streaming of the match on Facebook via Rooney's official page and also United's. The match, will also kickstarts Jose Mourinho's run as United manager, is raising funds for the
Wayne Rooney Foundation
which will distribute money to four of Rooney's chosen charitable organisations.
"I am delighted that through this agreement with Facebook my testimonial game will be streamed globally on both the Wayne Rooney and Manchester United Facebook pages," said Rooney. "It will be the first time this will have happened and will hopefully raise awareness of the Foundation and increase donations."
Rooney, 30, is United's second highest goalscorer of all time, and also holds the record of most goals for one club in the Premier League, with 177 for the
Red Devils
.
