CHENNAI:
Mumbai City FC pulled off a coup on Saturday as they roped in ex-Uruguay star
Diego Forlan
as their marquee player for the forthcoming edition of the
ISL
. The former Villarreal striker announced his decision on his official Twitter page on Saturday. "Very happy to play in the @MumbaiCityFC this season. Happy to play this season for the @MumbaiCityFC," Forlan tweeted.
He also posted a brief four-second video stating that he is ready to take ISL by storm. "Meri jaan Mumbai, I'm coming," he said.
As reported by TOI, the 37-year-old was approached by
Mumbai FC
three weeks back after his deal with
Atletico de Kolkata fell through. While Atletico were not willing to meet his demand of Rs 7.5 crore, Mumbai City FC were ready to break the bank to get the Golden Ball winner of the 2010 World Cup on board.
In an interview with a Uruguay TV channel, Forlan said that the vision of the ISL appealed to him. "They want to grow football, something that is understandable given the population," the 37-year-old said. "Next year they want to extend it to seven months and then to a whole year. For now, though, it is three months (my contract)," he said.
Mumbai City FC, who have struggled in the first two seasons, now pin their hopes on an in-form Forlan. The former Manchester United star had scored eight goals in 31appearances for the Montevideo-based side Club Atlético Peñarol and played a key role in the side's triumph in Uruguayan Primera Division.
Co-owner
Ranbir Kapoor said he can't wait to see Forlan don the Mumbai City FC jersey. "It's really exciting to have a player of Forlan's quality play for us in the upcoming season. He's one of the best in the business and I can't wait to see him on the field fighting it out for Mumbai," Ranbir told TOI on Saturday.
Mumbai City are scheduled to undergo a pre-season training camp in Dubai and Forlan will join his new team from the start of next month.
