Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur experienced a fiery end to their battle. 2025 UEFA Europa League final was one of a kind due to the captains and their aggresion. Harry Maguire and Cristian Romero ended up getting into heated post-game altercation. This was following Spurs' 1-0 win at San Mamés Stadium in Bilbao. The argument was stopped by teammates and officials. This showed an intense passion of both the clubs for the game and their high spirits.
The unexpected clash mid-game
During the match, team captains Maguire and Romero engaged into an unexpected physical battle. This occurred especially during set pieces. In the later minutes, a clash between the two resulted in a yellow card for Maguire. Romero, however remained on the ground, buying time as United pursued an equalizer.
After the completion of the game, Romero wanted to call a truce with Maguire, but he was denied this courtesy. When Romero attempted to shake hands with Diogo Dalot, Maguire confronted him. They could not be stopped until other players came over to stop them with the officials.
The momentum of the game shifted in the 42nd minute when Manchester United's Luke Shaw scored against them through an own goal, courtesy of Brennan Johnson's pressure. Tottenham's defense, led by Romero and Micky van de Ven, was unmatched despite United trying to tie the scores.
Tottenham Victory breaking records for the better
The Tottenham victory ended a 17-year trophy drought but also secured them a UEFA Champions League berth next season. Ange Postecoglou's second season at the helm was topped with success in Europe, and he promised to bring silverware.
At the end of the match, Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim was disappointed, expressing,
"I have nothing to show to our fans, I'm really honest with that." He conceded that the team had lost and left himself uncertain whether or not he would still be there.
