English Premier League: Arsenal fight back to hold Liverpool; Newcastle inch closer to Champions League spot
Newcastle secured a crucial 2-0 victory over Chelsea in their Champions League qualification bid, while Arsenal drew 2-2 with Liverpool after staging a comeback from two goals down in Premier League action on Sunday. The results significantly impacted the tight race for Champions League spots, with Newcastle moving to third place and Arsenal maintaining their grip on second.
Sandro Tonali gave Newcastle an early lead in the second minute at St James' Park, followed by Chelsea's Nicolas Jackson receiving a red card for elbowing Sven Botman before halftime. Bruno Guimaraes sealed the win with a stoppage-time goal.

The victory marked Newcastle's seventh win in nine league games, putting them three points clear of sixth-placed Aston Villa.
"We hung in there. We got over the line and that's the major thing in a game like today," said Newcastle manager Eddie Howe.
Chelsea's first defeat in seven league games complicated their Champions League aspirations, leaving them level on points with Aston Villa and just one point ahead of Nottingham Forest.
"It's already difficult 11 v 11 in this stadium against this team so playing an hour with 10 players is not easy," Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca stated.
At Anfield, Arsenal recovered from goals by Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz to secure a 2-2 draw through Gabriel Martinelli and Mikel Merino, despite Merino's late dismissal for a second yellow card.
"What we did in the first half is nowhere near the level. We reacted great but it is unacceptable," Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta commented.
Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold, who recently announced his departure at season's end, faced boos from some fans when introduced as a substitute.
"For the fans, they can always have the reaction they want but I will always back the players," Liverpool manager Arne Slot said.
Nottingham Forest drew 2-2 with relegated Leicester, prompting owner Evangelos Marinakis to confront manager Nuno Espirito Santo on the pitch after Facundo Buonanotte's 81st-minute equaliser.
"It is because of the owner and his passion that we are growing as a club. He pushes us. He wants us to be better," Nuno defended Marinakis, who had previously served a five-match stadium ban.
Manchester United suffered a 2-0 home defeat to West Ham, with Tomas Soucek scoring in the 26th minute and Jarrod Bowen adding another in the 57th minute. The loss came after United's Europa League semi-final victory over Athletic Bilbao, setting up an all-English final against Tottenham.
West Ham's victory moved them above United, who now sit in 16th place, facing their worst league finish since 1973-74.
Tottenham, despite reaching the Europa League final, lost 2-0 to Crystal Palace at home. Eberechi Eze scored twice, once before halftime and again in the 48th minute.
The defeat marked Tottenham's 20th league loss in 36 games, leaving them just above the relegation zone and potentially facing their worst finish since 1976-77. Manager Ange Postecoglou's position appears uncertain, even with a potential Europa League trophy.
Palace, who have reached the FA Cup final, strengthened their position with the victory, while both Manchester United and Tottenham continue their disappointing domestic campaigns despite European success.
