Erik ten Hag has been announced as the new manager of Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen on the club's official Instagram handle. The former United boss returns to football after a seven-month break after he cut ties with Manchester United in October 2024. Ten Hag comes to Leverkusen as the replacement for Xabi Alonso.
Alonso leaves Leverkusen nothing less of a club legend, helping this side to its first-ever Bundesliga title in the 2023/24 season. Adding to the achievement was the fact that he managed to do so without losing a single game. He also led the side to the Europa League final, but lost in the finale to Atalanta. In the season that followed, he failed to defend the title, as rivals Bayern Munich claimed the crown.

In Alonso's final season in charge, he led his team to a second-placed finish in the Bundesliga and to the DFL-Supercup title. While Leverkusen one of the most exciting and challenging sides in Europe, players like Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong are in big demand for club across Europe and Liverpool in particular. The Reds have already made formal offers for both players as well. With the Premier League champions offering in excess of €100 million, there will be no paucity of funds for the new boss to bring in players of his choice to the 2024 Bundesliga champions.
