Lewandowski finished with 34 goals this season after scoring yet again in Bayern's last Bundesliga match of the season on Saturday. Bayern finished their league engagements with a 4-0 win over Wolfsburg.

In fact, many feel that had Lewandowski not missed three league games of the season due to injury and suspension, he could have surpassed another Bayern legend Gerd Mueller's 40-goal single season record set in 1971-72. However, the stupendous performance throughout the season earned Lewandowski the Player of the Season award in German top-flight football.

Earlier, in quotes shared by Bayern exclusively with TOI, Lewandowski had said that the role of a No. 9 has evolved in football. "Football is always changing. It doesn't really matter what kind of tactic you are playing. It's important for a striker to be ready for all kinds of situations. A striker needs to be very flexible in today's game. Maybe 10 years ago, a striker's job was only to score goals. But, nowadays, the expectations are very high from a striker," the 31-year-old Lewandowski said.
