While Albon finished the race, Russell crossed the line in ninth position with two points—but was later classified 11th with no points due to the penalty. To make light of the incident, the two went out for a dinner outing in Monaco, and Albon paid the bill.
Why did Alex Albon take George Russell out for dinner in Monaco?
It seems George Russell and Alex Albon’s dinner outing was planned on Instagram. After the race, Russell shared a post which read: “Monaco is such a special place but we knew our weekend was over following the failure in qualifying. Dinner on you tonight Albono!”
Alex acknowledged his post and confirmed the outing, writing: “I’ll take you to a drive thru.” Later, Albon shared a picture from their dinner outing, confirming that he paid the bill. “You’re welcome @georgerussell63,” he wrote, along with a picture of himself literally holding the food bill.
What happened during the Monaco F1 race?
Williams driver Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz worked in tandem to dominate their portion of the track during the Monaco Grand Prix final, leaving little room for drivers behind them to pass. Mercedes driver George Russell tried hard to get ahead, but with the two Williams drivers protecting each other, Russell had no option but to force a pass by rubbing off the chicane.
As a result, while he did manage to get through, Russell was handed a penalty, making three pit stops compulsory for him instead of the usual two. But Russell didn’t seem too concerned. "I was a little bit surprised, but I've got to be honest, I didn't really care, because I was out of the points," he told media including RacingNews365.com after the race.
Having no regrets about his actions, Russell added: "We had planned with Kimi and I to basically do the same strategy as what VCARB [Racing Bulls] and Williams implemented with the two drivers. But, ultimately, qualifying 14th and 15th, there is nothing you can do. You pit on lap one, we'd have finished nowhere. You go long, we finished nowhere. Ironically, I finished in a higher position by doing my manoeuvre with Alex [Albon] than I would have done if I hadn't. So that in itself proves the system is pretty flawed."
