Kimi Antonelli’s net worth set to jump after Chinese Grand Prix win, Mercedes star celebrates with new car
The chants of “Kimi! Kimi!” are still reverberating across the Formula One world after Kimi Antonelli claimed his maiden Formula 1 victory at the Chinese Grand Prix at the Shanghai International Circuit. The 19-year-old Italian beat his Mercedes team-mate George Russell to clinch the win, becoming the second-youngest Grand Prix winner in history, just a day after becoming the youngest-ever pole-sitter. Max Verstappen remains the youngest driver to win a Grand Prix, having secured his first victory at the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix at the age of 18.
After the win, Antonelli introduced his new ‘mean machine’ - a Mercedes-Benz GLC 400 - on Instagram. Sharing pictures of the car, he wrote: “My favourite kind of timeout.”
Last year, the Italian reportedly earned $5 million, including bonuses, in his rookie season. With many more races to come and the potential for further podiums, it is believed that this victory could significantly boost his earnings, possibly doubling or even tripling that figure.
Antonelli later took to Instagram to share his emotions following his maiden F1 win. Posting a picture of himself kissing the trophy, he wrote, “The best day of my life. Winning my first Grand Prix is realising one of the few dreams I have had ever since I first put my hands on a steering wheel. This is just the beginning. From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank each and every one who has supported me on this journey: my team, my family, and you guys at home. It means the world to me, and it’s the strongest fuel to go after what’s next. See you back on track very soon. The best day of my life, so far.”
“The start is still our weak point. I didn’t go in with great confidence because my two previous starts were really bad. Obviously, I covered a little too much on the inside and left too much space on the outside, so I probably need to review that,” said Antonelli, as quoted by the BBC.
Despite a few minor scares during the race, Antonelli kept things under control and eventually defeated Russell by 5.5 seconds to seal a commanding victory.
