Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff is hopeful for the team's future following a solid outing at the Chinese Grand Prix. The Austrian said that the Silver Arrows were "clearly the second fastest team" on Sunday, a good sign for the remainder of the season. The team amassed seven points throughout the Sprint before heading home on Sunday with yet another great performance with Russell gaining P3 and Antonelli gaining P6, following post-race penalties reshuffled the finish.

Mercedes narrowing gap to McLaren: Toto Wolff's take

Russell's podium finish in China was especially promising, with him being just two seconds off Lando Norris, an improvement on the margin witnessed in Melbourne. Wolff noted this as evidence that Mercedes is closing the gap to their competitors.
“I wouldn’t say we are in the hunt now—when you look at Piastri being in front, it is easier on the tyres and you can manage it,” Wolff commented after the race, according to Formula1.com. “But we are not far away; maybe the gap is a couple of tenths rather than the second it was in Melbourne."
The team principal was especially impressed by Russell's outing, describing it as a ‘10 out of 10’ performance as the Brit got every bit of power out of the car. Having Mercedes second in the Constructors' Championship, the future looks positive to Wolff.

Faith in the development of the car

Since the regulations on ground effect were introduced in 2022, Mercedes has not been able to compete consistently at the front. But Wolff now believes that there is a more stable base with the W15, and there is more predictable car behavior.
“The platform is more stable; when we turn a screw on some sort of mechanical device, a wing—it does what we expected,” the team principal explained. “We also have to be realistic that it is not where we want it to be.”
Although Mercedes is not yet battling for victory, Wolff underlined the need for ongoing development and added that the ability to control tires will be one of the key components in future triumphs.

Rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli excels after early damage

Newcomer Andrea Kimi Antonelli delivered another level-headed display, claiming P6 after taking heavy floor damage on the first lap. The Italian's grit was rewarded with the Driver of the Day accolade, further demonstrating his talent in his first year.
Wolff praised Antonelli’s composure under challenging conditions. “He got extensive floor damage; we don’t know why—maybe he ran over Charles' endplate, but he had like massive holes in the floor and titanium strips that were gone,” Wolff revealed.

With Mercedes continuing to demonstrate consistent progress, the attention now turns to the remainder of the races as they look to capitalize on their early-season form and compete for wins.
