Why F1’s Barcelona shakedown is private and how much running teams can do: All details explained
The preparation for the 2026 Formula 1 season has already begun within the teams, with several new cars completing shakedown laps at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya before their public reveal. Despite the lack of a public event, the Barcelona Shakedown remains an important tool for teams to prepare their vehicles for the upcoming season.
While there will be no public lap times or competition during the shakedown, it will enable teams to assess their vehicles' reliability, perform systems testing, and experience how their cars respond to new regulations as they will operate in the real world.
The shakedown allows teams to accumulate a lot of mileage before the normal promotional strategy commences, as filming days place limitations on the number of kilometres a team can operate each vehicle (limited to 200 kms per day) and are also subject to public gaze. All teams will benefit from privacy, as they will not have to worry about a competitor seeing their aerodynamics early on, especially with the many major technical changes taking place for the 2026 season.
Teams also may delay moving to the track until they complete their components, so they may conserve mileage by delaying or cancelling test runs if it rains. Williams is the only team not participating in this shakedown as they are redirecting their resources to other priority areas before joining the competition in Bahrain.
After the Barcelona Shakedown, teams will travel to Bahrain for a pre-season test from February 11 to 13, followed by a second pre-season test from February 18 to 20. The season will officially start on March 6-8, with the first race of the 24-race calendar, the Australian Grand Prix.

Why the Barcelona shakedown happens behind closed doors
The Barcelona Shakedown is held in private because it's the very first opportunity each team has to operate its respective 2026 car. Functionality is the focus for all teams; during this event, engineers will assess the power units, cooling systems, electronics, and software stability of the vehicles while also confirming data obtained earlier in the off-season via the simulator. The shakedown allows teams to accumulate a lot of mileage before the normal promotional strategy commences, as filming days place limitations on the number of kilometres a team can operate each vehicle (limited to 200 kms per day) and are also subject to public gaze. How many running teams are allowed during the event
The Barcelona Shakedown runs from January 26 to January 30, but teams only have three days of running time within those five days. The aim of this rule is to give the teams the opportunity to select the days for their test runs based on their prototype development schedules and the weather forecasts as best as they can.Teams also may delay moving to the track until they complete their components, so they may conserve mileage by delaying or cancelling test runs if it rains.
