India vs New Zealand Hockey World Cup 2023 Highlights: India fail to qualify for quarter-finals, lose to New Zealand in penalty shootout

An Indian team in utter disbelief choked amid high drama at the Hockey World Cup as New Zealand stunned the hosts in sudden-death to move into the quarterfinals and relegate the Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist to play the placement matches in Rourkela. Leading twice by two goals -- 2-0 first and then 3-1, the Indian defence failed to withstand the pressure exerted by New Zealand who beat India at their game to come back and end the 60 minutes at 3-3. The penalty shootout also ended 3-3, and the game entered sudden death, as the crowd slowly moved to the edge of their seats and waited with bated breath.

Fourth and final quarter gets underway

End of the third quarter: India 3 - NZ 2. Fifteen minutes left to play.

45th min: India get a PC for a rough tackle inside the 23-yard line. Eighth PC for India. Amit takes it, but his grounded drag-flick is wide.

44th min: Penalty corner to New Zealand at the end of a counter-attack. GOAL! NZ again come back. Kane Russell puts the ball in the net, beating Sreejesh.

43rd min: India on the attack. Rajkumar, playing in Hardik's place, makes his presence felt. But NZ alert to the danger.

GOAL! Varun's grounder finds the mark, and India are ahead 3-1 now. The crowd goes berserk!

41st min: Brilliant 1-2 between Akaash and Mandeep, but again crowding tactics by NZ in front of goal-mouth. Akaash asks for a PC. Review taken. PC given. Varun drags but it leaves it for Jarman by playing a dummy. But Jarman's slap easily blocked. Another PC though.

39th min: PC to India. Sixth one for India. Harmanpreet again fails to breach the defence with his flick. The ball ricocheted to Sukhjeet, but too many defenders to beat. Danger averted for NZ.

Sukhjeet playing the lurking forward, something Mandeep does so well. Almost had another shot at goal in the 34th min.

Third quarter gets underway after the 10-minute half-time

At half-time, NZ have sent a bit of scare back into the Indian camp by cutting the lead down to one goal as India lead 2-1 with goals from Lalit Upadhyay and Sukhjeet Singh.

GOAL! NZ cut down India's lead. Agains the run of play, Simon Child sets up Sam Lane, who just had to show direction to the ball and it went past the goal-line. India 2 - 1 NZ

27th min: India playing a bit more assertively now having added a cushion to their lead.

25th min: Another PC! This time it's a GOAL! But not off a drag-flick. Sukhjeet tapped the aerial ball in after it rebounded once Harman's flick was saved. India up 2-0.

23rd Min: PC to India. India try a variation, with a deflection from the drag-flick but Amit couldn't connect to deflect the ball.

GOAL! NO! DISALLOWED! India thought they went up 2-0 through Nilakanta Sharma who sounded the board off a rebound. But NZ asked for a review. The crowd waited with bated breath. And the umpire said no goal. The ball had crossed the baseline before it ricocheted to Nilakanta.

22nd min: Lalit having a brilliant game, this time sets up Abhishek who creates India's second penalty corner. Varun takes the drag-flick, and the ball rises off the rusher's stick. Another PC.

21st min: NZ are not letting up, keeping pressure on the ball and keeping the Indian defence busy.
