Women's Hockey India League: Gorzelany leads Bengal Tigers to victory

The Argentine scored her fourth goal of the tournament, once again from a penalty corner, as Bengal Tigers earned a 1-0 win. It was their fourth PC of the match and Gorzelany powered the ball down the right side and into the net. Bichu Devi Kharibam, who made a brilliant save off the earlier shot, tried to get across to it but couldn't reach it.
This was Bengal Tigers' second win in regular time and they are placed second on the table with eight points from four matches. As for the Royals, they are third with six points from the same number of games.
Earlier, the Royals dominated the proceedings, winning five penalty corners and making seven circle penetrations in the first quarter, but they just couldn't get the goal. While the defenders did a good job, it was their goalkeeper Jennifer Rizzo who made the difference making some splendid saves during the PCs.
However, after the break it was Bengal Tigers who took control of the game and started putting pressure on the Royals defence. And they should have taken the lead had it not been for Madhuri Kindo, who once again impressed with her goalkeeping skills.
On two occasions she denied Lalremsiami from scoring. Once was when she got her hands to a shot from close range that would have easily gone into the top-right corner. The other time was when the two of them were in a one-on-one situation and Kindo came out of her blocks to force Lalremsiami to change her direction and miss the target.
But Royals finally succumbed to the pressure of Bengal Tigers as Gorzelany scored seven minutes into the third quarter.
In the final quarter, Royals went all out in search of the equaliser, but it just did not come. With little more than two minutes left, Albela Rani Toppo did sound the board once, but it wasn't allowed and the Royals also couldn't review it because too much time had gone by.
In the end, Bengal Tigers held on for the win and avenged their 0-5 defeat to the Royals earlier in the tournament. As for Royals, they will look to bounce back when they face off against Soorma Hockey Club on Monday.
