Alysa Liu family: Inside the story of Olympic figure skater's father Arthur Liu, surrogacy journey, and close bond with her siblings

Milano Cortina Winter Olympics gold medalist Alysa Liu is known for her success on the ice, but her life at home is just as special. The American figure skater grew up in a large and unique family in California. She is the eldest of five children. Her father, Arthur Liu, raised all five kids as a single parent. Alysa has often spoken about how important her family is to her life and career.

Alysa Liu was born on August 8, 2005, through surrogacy. Her father, Arthur Liu, had always dreamed of becoming a parent. He decided to have children when he was 40 years old. Over time, he welcomed five children through two surrogate mothers and anonymous egg donors. Alysa shares the same surrogate mother as her younger triplet siblings - Julia, Joshua, and Justin. Unfortunately, the family has little to no idea where is Alysa Liu’s mother.

Speaking to the San Francisco chronicle, Arthur explained that he had always wanted children and felt the time was right to start a family. When Alysa was young, she became curious about her background and asked why she looked different and did not resemble a typical Chinese child. Arthur told her the truth about her birth in 2013. He later shared that Alysa and one of her friends had nearly figured it out themselves, so she was not shocked when he explained everything.

Arthur was born in a small mountain village in China. His family lived without electricity. He later moved to a bigger city for school and earned higher degrees before going to California. In the United States, he completed law school and became a lawyer in the Bay Area.

Alysa Liu’s journey to the top of figure skating was supported by her father and siblings every step of the way. Arthur Liy chose surrogacy and anonymous egg donors to build his family. Alysa grew up with sisters Selina and Julia, and brothers Joshua and Justin.

Arthur raised the gold medalist figure skater without Alysa Liu mother. He raised her and her siblings with help from his mother, Shu, who moved from China to assist him. The five children grew up in Richmond, California. At one point, they all shared one bedroom with three bunk beds. Alysa has said she misses those days because they were full of fun and laughter.

Alysa Liu siblings have always supported her skating career. They even watched her compete live for the first time at the 2026 Winter Olympics. Liu has made it clear that family remains her biggest source of strength, both on and off the ice.
