Anthony Joshua driver faces four charges as new court details emerge in deadly Nigeria road accident
Anthony Joshua walked away from a crash that changed his life forever. Two of his closest friends never did but now, weeks later, the boxer’s driver has appeared in court, and the pain is still clear on every face involved. Joshua’s driver, Adeniyi Kayode, looked emotional as he arrived at court in Sagamu, southwest Nigeria, to face serious charges over the crash that killed Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele. Both men were 36 and died on the spot. The crash happened on December 29, while Joshua was traveling with his team.
Ghami was Joshua’s strength and conditioning coach. Ayodele was his personal trainer. Anthony Joshua himself suffered only minor injuries. That detail still shocks many people, especially after learning how close he came to sitting in the same seat as one of the men who died.
According to prosecutors, Kayode was driving a black Lexus SUV when it hit the back of a parked truck carrying soya beans. The impact ripped off the side of the car, Ghami and Ayodele were killed instantly and Joshua and Kayode survived.
Adeniyi Kayode, 46, faces four charges, including dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care, and driving without a valid national licence. A judge granted him £2,600 bail while the case was adjourned.
Video from the court showed Kayode wearing a black hoodie, keeping his head down, and appearing deeply upset. In later footage, he looked distressed as a friend comforted him while leaving the court.
Prosecutors told the court that Kayode did not have a valid driver’s licence at the time of the crash. The road where the crash happened is known as one of Nigeria’s deadliest.
Anthony Joshua survived because he had swapped seats at the last moment. His lawyer said Joshua was first sitting in the front seat, but the driver asked him to move so he could see the mirror better. Latif Ayodele then took the front seat.
Adeniyi Kayode pleaded not guilty and claimed the brakes failed. His lawyer, Olalekan Abiodun, told Daily Mail:
“My client has pleaded not guilty. He says the brakes did not work.”
Joshua spoke publicly on January 8 through Instagram. He wrote:
“Thank you for all the love and care you have shown my brothers. I didn’t even realise how special they are.”
“It’s tough for me, but it’s tougher for their parents. May God have mercy on my brothers.”
Despite the trauma, Anthony Joshua returned to training 19 days after the crash. He shared gym videos on Snapchat, calling it “mental strength therapy.” He landed in London on January 2 and has been recovering at home.
