Carlos Alcaraz reacts to rivals’ aggressive play ahead of Miami Open, reveals why it’s “not that funny” at times

Carlos Alcaraz opens up on the challenges on court

Speaking in a pre-tournament interview, Alcaraz explained how he views this shift in how opponents play against him. "I think I am just trying to take it as a compliment when players try to play their best, more aggressively if they want to beat me," Alcaraz said in a pre-tournament interview in Miami as quoted by the ATP official website. He sees it as part of his growth as a player and something that pushes everyone to improve. “I think it is a great thing to know, and obviously, I am just really happy that they are taking us [as] players to try to beat, and we are trying to make them improve as a player as well. So for me, that is great.” At the same time, he admitted that it is not always enjoyable in the moment. "But sometimes when I step on the court and see the opponent playing that level, it is not that funny," he concluded.
Alcaraz also shared how he approaches tough matches, saying he tries to stay one step ahead instead of just reacting. "It is like chess in a way. I am trying to be there a little bit earlier or trying to think what is going to happen next. Then I can think about my move. I am trying that or just trying to be more aggressive than them or trying not to let them be in a good spot all the time," he summed up.
His Miami Open campaign will begin against rising star Joao Fonseca, a 19-year-old known for his fearless style. The matchup already has fans curious, given both players prefer an attacking approach. Alcaraz also has history at this event. He won his first ATP Masters title here in 2022 and holds a strong 13-4 record in Miami. However, last year ended in disappointment with a shock early exit.
