Conor McGregor reminds Floyd Mayweather about that MMA promise everyone forgot ahead of the upcoming White House event

Talk of a possible rematch between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather Jr. has returned once again. More than eight years after their historic crossover fight, McGregor has publicly mentioned Mayweather ahead of a rumored UFC event at the White House. Their 2017 boxing match became one of the biggest events in combat sports history and generated close to $600 million in total revenue.

McGregor recently teased the idea of facing Mayweather again while preparing for a potential appearance at a White House event scheduled for June 14, President Donald Trump’s birthday. Although no official fight card has been announced, rumors suggest McGregor may finally fight Michael Chandler. Still, McGregor’s comments about Mayweather have quickly shifted attention back to a possible rematch.

Conor McGregor surprised fans by posting an old video from his 2017 feud with Mayweather and tagging Dana White and the UFC. In the caption, he invited Floyd Mayweather to finally accept an MMA fight and suggested the White House would be a perfect venue during summer. He described the moment as lighthearted and playful.

Shortly after, McGregor clarified that the post was meant as a joke. He said it was aimed at easing Michael Chandler’s frustration after waiting since 2023 for a fight. McGregor added that, hypothetically, he could even fight both men on the same night. He claimed an MMA fight with Mayweather would be easy and would not last long. In the comment section, McGregor also floated the idea of facing Mayweather under Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship rules.

Despite the buzz, a rematch remains very unlikely. Both fighters are massive stars with huge earning power, but several obstacles stand in the way. Dana White has long been against a second fight unless it happens inside the Octagon. He has repeatedly stated that McGregor already boxed Mayweather once, and any rematch would only make sense if Mayweather agreed to fight under MMA rules.

White shut down rematch rumors again in 2022, calling the speculation nonsense. He also made it clear back in 2018 that he had no interest in promoting another boxing match. Since then, White has avoided commenting further, even though fans continue to speculate.

Questions have also been raised about the true financial numbers from the first fight. Fighters like Chael Sonnen and Mike Perry have openly doubted the reported earnings and total revenue figures. At Mayweather’s age, many wonder why he would risk his health for another fight when he is already extremely wealthy.

For now, the idea of McGregor versus Mayweather remains more fantasy than fact.
