Debora Silvestri recovery underway after Milan San Remo crash as team confirms five broken ribs and hospital update
Debora Silvestri is now in stable condition after a scary crash during the Milan San Remo race on Saturday. The Italian cyclist was rushed to hospital after falling headfirst over a roadside barrier while trying to avoid a pile-up. The moment looked serious, and many riders were left shaken after the incident near the end of the race.
By Sunday morning, her team Laboral Kutxa shared a positive update. In a post on X, they said Silvestri is “in good spirits” and showing signs of recovery. She is still under medical care and will remain in the hospital for observation. The team made it clear that doctors are closely monitoring her condition as she continues to recover from the fall.
Soon after the crash, Laboral Kutxa first confirmed that she was conscious and on her way to the hospital. Later, they shared another update saying, “Debora Silvestri continues to evolve favourably. She is in good spirits and with the strength to face her recovery.” The team also added, “She will remain in the hospital in the coming hours to continue being monitored.”
Silvestri herself gave a direct update on Instagram, showing her usual fighting spirit. She wrote, “I feel quite good, five ribs broken and a micro fracture on shoulder could be worse. Time to recover but no worries, I will come back.” Her message quickly reassured fans who were worried after seeing the crash.
The team also thanked fans for their support. In their statement, they said both Silvestri and the team “sincerely thank everyone for all the messages of support and encouragement received in the last hours.”
The race itself continued after the incident, but the mood clearly changed. Belgium’s Lotte Kopecky went on to win the 156 km race after a close sprint finish against Switzerland’s Noemi Ruegg. Still, the crash remained the main talking point.
Kasia Niewiadoma Phinney and Kim Le Court Pienaar were also involved in the same incident. Niewiadoma Phinney could not continue, while Le Court Pienaar managed to get back on her bike but finished far behind in 99th place.
Even Kopecky, after winning, kept her focus on the riders who crashed. She said, “I hope everyone is okay.” Right now, the biggest relief is that Silvestri is stable and already thinking about her comeback.
