How many players have scored 900+ official football goals?
Football has tested many players, but Cristiano Ronaldo has mastered it like no one else. The Portugal star is currently the only men’s footballer in history to score 900 or more official goals. No other male player has reached this number yet. His long-time rival Lionel Messi is the closest challenger. Messi has scored 896 official goals and remains just a few goals behind. Brazilian legend Pelé is third on the all-time list with 765 goals. Ronaldo was also the first player to break the 800-goal mark in 2021!
The Portugal captain became the first men’s player to score 900 goals in official matches. He reached the landmark during Portugal’s UEFA Nations League match against Croatia in Lisbon. Ronaldo scored with a close-range volley in the 34th minute after a cross from Nuno Mendes. His goal helped Portugal take a 2-0 lead before winning the match 2-1.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner, Cristiano Ronaldo has admitted that the achievement meant a lot to him. He explained that the milestone showed years of hard work, discipline, and mental strength. Ronaldo also made it clear that his journey is not finished yet. He has already spoken openly about his next big target. The Portuguese star wants to reach 1,000 career goals and believes it is possible if he stays fit and avoids injuries.
Ronaldo’s goal tally continues to rise even at the age of 39. He recently scored his 960th official goal for Al-Nassr in a 2-1 win over Damac in the Saudi Pro League. That result kept Al-Nassr close to league leaders Al-Hilal. Ronaldo is now only 40 goals away from his dream target of 1,000 goals.
The Portugal captain still has many matches ahead this season. He has at least 20 guaranteed games with Al-Nassr in domestic and Asian competitions. His club could also play more matches if they reach the later stages of the Asian Champions League. In addition, Ronaldo will represent Portugal in international friendlies against Mexico and the United States.
With a total goal breakdown of 450 for Real Madrid, 145 for Manchester United, 143 for Portugal, 116 for Al-Nassr, 101 for Juventus, and five for Sporting, Ronaldo stands alone at the top. For now, he remains the only player to cross the 900-goal mark in men’s football.
