“I ain't an idiot”: World No 3 Alexander Zverev clarifies controversial Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz “gap” comments amid French Open 2026 campaign
World No. 3 Alexander Zverev has responded to criticism surrounding his recent comments about Jannik Sinner and the current hierarchy in men’s tennis. The German star faced backlash after suggesting that Sinner was clearly ahead of the rest of the ATP Tour, while placing himself alongside Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz just behind the Italian.
Zverev’s remarks came shortly after his heavy defeat to Sinner in the Madrid Open final. The Italian dominated the match in straight sets and extended his winning streak against the German to nine matches. Following criticism online, Zverev has now explained that his comments were based only on recent form and current tournament conditions rather than career achievements.
Speaking in a recent interview, Alexander Zverev clarified that his earlier statement was misunderstood by many tennis fans. The 29-year-old explained that he was discussing the current level of players at that moment, especially with Alcaraz injured and Djokovic inactive after Indian Wells.
The German admitted that Sinner has been performing at a much higher level than everyone else over the last few months. However, he stressed that he never intended to compare his overall career achievements with legends like Djokovic or rising stars like Alcaraz. Zverev stated that he fully understands the difference in accomplishments. He said he was only speaking about recent performances on tour.
He also reflected on his recent losses against Sinner in Madrid and Monaco. According to Zverev, he was disappointed with his own level during those matches and believes he can challenge the Italian if he produces his best tennis. The German pointed to his previous strong performances against Alcaraz as proof that he can compete with the top players when fully confident.
Meanwhile, Zverev continues his hunt for a first Grand Slam title at French Open 2026. His chances improved after Arthur Fils withdrew from the tournament because of injury. Fils had been viewed as one of the biggest threats in Zverev’s section of the draw.
Zverev also began his Roland Garros campaign strongly with a straight-sets victory over Benjamin Bonzi in the opening round. After the match, he said he was pleased to begin the tournament with a comfortable win against an opponent capable of troubling top players.
The German will next face Tomas Machac in the second round. Zverev had previously defeated the Czech player during the Paris Olympics 2024.
