Ilia Topuria vs Justin Gaethje gets major Dana White endorsement as Dricus du Plessis weighs in

UFC CEO Dana White is already building excitement for the upcoming lightweight title fight between Ilia Topuria and Justin Gaethje. The two stars are set to meet at UFC White House on June 14 as part of the America250 celebrations, and many fans believe it could be one of the most action-packed fights of the year. Topuria starts the fight with a lot of energy. Recent years have seen the unbeaten champion appear unbeatable, and he has knocked some of the top names in the sport out. Gaethje, meantime, is still one of MMA's most aggressive and knockout powerful fighters and among the most hazardous ones.

Speaking to UFC on TNT Sports, White shared why he believes the matchup is so exciting. He pointed to the power both fighters carry and said fans should expect a thrilling battle when they finally step into the cage together. White was especially impressed by Topuria’s confidence and ability to move forward under pressure. The UFC boss believes that quality is one of the biggest reasons why the Georgian-Spanish fighter has become such a dominant force across two weight classes.

While discussing the fight with UFC on TNT Sports, White praised Topuria’s recent performances and highlighted his fearless approach. “Imagine him and Gaethje toe-to-toe just banging it out. Both guys have the ability… having nasty, nasty knockout power. You see? This kid doesn’t back up. He just comes in absolutely confident in his hands, absolutely confident in his chin, knocking out guys who have never been knocked out before.”

The numbers support White’s praise. Topuria owns a perfect 17-0 professional record, with 15 victories coming by finish. Gaethje, meanwhile, holds a 27-5 record and has scored 20 knockout wins during his career.

Still, not everyone believes the fight is one-sided. UFC middleweight champion Dricus du Plessis recently shared a different view during an interview with Fight Forecast. He believes Gaethje has the tools needed to challenge the undefeated champion.

“He’s not scared. He’s not scared of Ilia Topuria. Ilia is too calculated, and he hits too hard. I believe Ilia has a lot better grappling and wrestling. I believe his key to victory would be those leg kicks.”

Du Plessis also suggested that Gaethje should avoid trading punches in close range for long periods.

“He has devastating leg kicks. Ilia has been dropped with head kicks a couple of times in his career before. So, using those kicks, setting up, but not standing and banging in that pocket. That is not going to be his answer. Setting up that knockout shot, that is going to be it.”
