Her rise in gymnastics was not smooth. In 2019, just before a major competition, Suni’s father suffered a spinal cord injury after falling from a ladder. He became paralyzed from the waist down. Around the same time, her family also lost loved ones during the COVID-19 pandemic. Still, Lee kept moving forward. She didn't give up. She used pain as motivation.

At the Tokyo Olympics, the pressure became bigger. Simone Biles stepped away from competition to focus on her mental health. Suddenly, all eyes were on Suni. Many wondered if she could handle the moment. She answered in the best possible way. Calm, focused, and fearless, Lee won the Olympic all-around gold medal in 2021. She became the first Hmong-American Olympian to achieve this.

What makes Suni special is not only the medals. It is her attitude. In 2023, she was diagnosed with rare kidney diseases. Her body would swell, and she often felt weak and dizzy. Many athletes may have walked away from the sport. Lee chose to fight again.

After months away from gymnastics, she returned stronger. At the 2024 Paris Olympics, she helped Team USA win gold and also earned bronze medals in the all-around and uneven bars events. Her comeback inspired millions around the world.

Lee's story also reminds people that greatness is created behind the scenes. Long training hours. Injuries. Fear. Doubts. Sacrifices. These are the things fans do not always see. Just like Simone Biles, Suni Lee’s success comes from years of hard work when nobody was watching.
