Justin Allgaier reveals real struggle balancing Dale Earnhardt Jr team and Hendrick Motorsports role before Darlington NASCAR showdown

Justin Allgaier is living a tough but important moment right now. The Dale Earnhardt Jr. driver is balancing two big roles, and it is not as easy as it sounds. As he prepares for the Darlington race, Allgaier has shared how hard it has become to manage both his NASCAR Xfinity Series season and his sudden Cup Series duties. Allgaier stepped in for Alex Bowman in the No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports car after Bowman started dealing with vertigo issues. What was first expected to be a short replacement has now turned into a longer run. And now, with Bowman set to miss more races, Allgaier is doing double duty almost every week.

Speaking to The Athletic’s Jeff Gluck, Allgaier said, “I want to do the best job I can and be as prepared as I can be for the 48 team, without leaving the seven team and our chances of the O’Reilly series championship.” He is trying to stay focused, but the workload is growing fast.

Allgaier made it clear that the biggest challenge is managing time and focus. He has to attend meetings, simulator sessions, and race prep for two different teams. And both cars are very different to drive.

He explained, “So, you’re trying to manage all of that. Whether it be simulator time or team meetings. We do a post-race meeting every week with both teams. You do a pre-race meeting every week with both teams. You know, both teams have simulator time. So, you’re juggling all of this. And they’re completely different cars.”

While he is giving his best, Allgaier also understands that the No. 48 team is waiting for Bowman to return. He said, “They want him back. He has assembled an awesome group of guys around him. Blake Harris and that whole 48 team, they’re fun to be around. They’re great at what they do.”

At the same time, Allgaier is still competing strong in the Xfinity Series with JR Motorsports. He already has a race win and multiple top-10 finishes this season. That means he is still a title contender, even with this extra pressure.

Looking ahead, Darlington could be a big moment for him. His last Cup race had some issues, including a speeding penalty. But if he performs well in the next few races, he could prove that he belongs at this level.

There is also a bigger picture here. Alex Bowman has struggled with results compared to other Hendrick drivers, and now his health issues are adding more questions. If things do not improve, the team may have to make a tough decision in the future.

For Allgaier, this could turn into a huge chance. If he keeps performing well, he might earn a more permanent spot in the Cup Series. For now, though, his focus is simple, handle both roles, stay strong, and make the most of every race.
