Michael van Gerwen gives health update and confirms return for Belfast Premier League Darts night
Michael van Gerwen has recently provided a major and positive health update before the next night of the Premier League Darts. Previously, the Dutch star had to withdraw from the Glasgow event last week because of his illness. It was a worrying period for his fans as the three-time world champion also missed other tournaments. His absence meant he could not compete in Players Championship 5 and 6. Now, the 36-year-old has confirmed that he is recovering and plans to return to action in Belfast Premier League Darts.
The former world No.1 darts performer did not publicly reveal the exact illness he was suffering from. However, his close friend and fellow darts player Vincent van der Voort has revealed that he had been taking antibiotics. Van Gerwen admitted he was seriously unwell but is now improving. He is expected to play on Thursday, February 26, in Northern Ireland. His return is important from tournament perspective because the Premier League season is still in its early stages, and points are crucial for qualification.
Michael Van Gerwen said he is ready to travel and compete again. Speaking to AD.nl, he said, “I’m feeling much better, but I was really poorly”.
His recent absence has affected his rhythm. The Dutchman has previously missed four tournaments in a row. His latest missed events were Players Championship 5 and 6. Before falling sick, he had struggled for form in the Premier League Darts. In night two of the competition, Welsh star Gerwyn Price defeated him comfortably. Price beat Van Gerwen 6-0 in the quarter-finals of the second event and later won the night with a 6-3 victory in the final.
Now the two rivals will meet once again. They are scheduled to face each other in the first round in Belfast on Thursday. It will be a difficult test for Michael Van Gerwen as he immediately returns after illness. Still, Van Gerwen’s presence is a big boost for the tournament because he remains one of the sport’s most popular and successful players.
The Premier League format means every match matters, and early defeats can hurt a player’s chances of reaching the play-offs. Even so, Van Gerwen’s experience could help him quickly regain momentum if his fitness holds up during the night.
