Olympian Fred Kerley legal battle ends after battery case dropped and attorney praises prosecutors for final decision
Olympian Fred Kerley is back in the headlines, but this time for a legal update rather than a race. The battery charge against Fred Kerley was dropped on Tuesday, his lawyer confirmed after a court appearance in Florida. The decision ends a case that began with his arrest in May 2025.
Kerley, a two-time Olympic medalist, shared the news with fans on Instagram soon after leaving court. He wrote, “Pressure built me, it didn’t break me. Case dismissed. Victory secured.” He added, “You can’t stop destiny. It’s up from here.” His attorney, Richard L. Cooper, said prosecutors made the correct choice and noted that Kerley had maintained his innocence from the start. The update closes a difficult chapter while allowing the track star to focus again on his athletic career.
Despite the allegation, Kerley denied wrongdoing from the beginning. His attorney later said, “He had a target on his back,” while also thanking prosecutors for their final decision. “We're grateful prosecutors made the right choice and did the right thing,” Cooper added.
The Office of the State Attorney explained why the case could not continue. Officials said the trial was scheduled, but the alleged victim was unavailable to appear in court. The judge did not allow a delay request, meaning “the state could not go forward and had to drop the charge.” Because of this, the case ended without a conviction.
For Kerley, the outcome removes a major distraction. The American sprinter has earned global recognition through Olympic medals and world-class sprint performances. Legal challenges had briefly shifted attention away from his achievements on the track. Now, with the charge dismissed, focus may return to his training and future competitions.
So far, Kerley has not announced specific upcoming race plans. Still, his public message suggests confidence about what comes next. After months of uncertainty, the court decision provides closure and a chance to move forward in both sport and life.

According to Kerley’s lawyer, the charge was connected to an arrest on May 1, 2025. Police alleged Kerley struck his former girlfriend, Olympic hurdler Alaysha Johnson, during an argument. Johnson told officers she met Kerley at a conditioning appointment for an upcoming track and field event. She claimed the disagreement became physical and said her nose began to bleed. Officers noted in their report that “Johnson's injuries were consistent with her statements.”Despite the allegation, Kerley denied wrongdoing from the beginning. His attorney later said, “He had a target on his back,” while also thanking prosecutors for their final decision. “We're grateful prosecutors made the right choice and did the right thing,” Cooper added.
