French runner Aurore Fleury is reportedly facing a six-month suspension after allegedly breaking competition manipulation rules, according to a report from French outlet Spe15. The case has raised serious questions about athlete conduct and betting rules in track and field. Reports claim Aurore Fleury, who is 32 years old, placed a bet on fellow French athlete Alice Finot to win the women’s 3000m steeplechase at the 2024 European Championships in Rome. Alice Finot won the race, and that result later triggered a review under Athletics Integrity Unit rules. While betting on sports is legal in many places, Aurore Fleury is alleged to have violated a strict rule that bans athletes from betting on events in their own sport. According to reports, the ban could last until March 2026. However, the Athletics Integrity Unit has not yet released an official statement confirming the suspension. When asked about the situation, Aurore Fleury said she would speak after the Athletics Integrity Unit publishes its formal report. She explained that all such decisions are made public and said the full details would be clear once the report is released.

Athletics Integrity Unit rules explain why the Aurore Fleury case is serious

The Athletics Integrity Unit defines competition manipulation as any attempt to influence the result of a sporting event. This includes actions linked to betting, gambling, or inside information, even if the athlete is not competing in the race involved. Under Athletics Integrity Unit rules, athletes are not allowed to bet on competitions in their own sport or discipline. This rule applies to major events like European Championships, World Championships, and the Olympic Games. The goal is to protect fairness and trust in sport. Before this allegation, Aurore Fleury was known for a strong athletic career. She represented France in international competitions and earned podium finishes at national events. Aurore Fleury also won medals at the European Cross Country Championships and claimed gold with France at the Mediterranean Games. The case shows how closely athletes are monitored today. Oversight does not stop with drug testing. Betting behavior, online activity, and past actions are also reviewed. The recent findings indicate that enforcement can take place years after an event has occurred. For instance, in relation to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, samples were both obtained and are to be tested until 2026 using new and iteratively advanced technology to now show additional athletes' doping violations. Moreover, it also indicates that even once an event has concluded, there continues to exist the possibility of punitive actions against those athletes. For now, Aurore Fleury has not been officially suspended. Her future will depend on the Athletics Integrity Unit’s final decision. The case serves as a clear reminder that athletes must follow integrity rules both on and off the track.
