Serena Williams hints at sensational tennis comeback ahead of Wimbledon 2026 after 4 years
Serena Williams is reportedly preparing for a surprise return to professional tennis at the Queen’s Club tournament next month. The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion has been away from the sport for nearly four years, but recent reports suggest she is considering playing doubles at the WTA 500 grass-court event in London ahead of Wimbledon.
The tournament begins on June 8 and would mark Williams’ first competitive appearance since the 2022 US Open. Although nothing has been confirmed yet, the American tennis legend became eligible to return after completing six months in the anti-doping testing pool. Fans are now excited about the possibility of seeing one of the greatest players in tennis history back on court once again.
According to reports, Serena Williams may play doubles at Queen’s Club with 19-year-old Canadian player Victoria Mboko. However, the partnership has not yet been officially confirmed. Williams would need a wildcard entry to participate, and tournament organisers still have two doubles wildcard spots available.
One of those wildcard entries can be given to a team featuring a former world number one, a recent Grand Slam champion, or a current top-30 player. Because of Williams’ legendary status in tennis, many believe she could receive special consideration if she decides to return.
Williams has never fully accepted the idea of retirement. Back in 2022, she explained that she preferred to describe her situation as “moving away” from tennis instead of retiring completely. Her last match came at the US Open, where she lost to Ajla Tomljanović in the third round.
The American icon remains one of the greatest female tennis players ever. She won 23 Grand Slam singles titles, which is the highest number in the Open era for women. Williams also enjoyed huge success in doubles alongside her sister Venus Williams, winning 14 Grand Slam doubles titles and three Olympic gold medals together.
The Lawn Tennis Association usually gives wildcard spots to British players during the grass-court season. However, officials have hinted that exceptional situations could lead to different decisions. Tennis administrators recently suggested that while British players remain the priority, unique opportunities that benefit the sport and tournaments could also be considered.
Venus Williams, who is older than Serena by 15 months, continues to compete occasionally on the WTA Tour. She played several tournaments this year and remains active in doubles competition.
If Serena does return at Queen’s Club, it would become one of the biggest stories in tennis ahead of Wimbledon.
