Shaun Wright-Phillips sends harsh warning to Joao Pedro as Chelsea’s European dreams continue falling apart
Chelsea forward Joao Pedro is already being linked with a possible move away from Stamford Bridge, even though he joined the club only last summer. Former Chelsea winger Shaun Wright-Phillips believes the Brazilian should seriously consider leaving if FC Barcelona come calling. His comments arrived at a time when Chelsea’s season continues to fall apart in the Premier League.
The London club has now lost six straight league matches and sits ninth in the table. Their latest defeat came against Nottingham Forest in a painful 3-1 loss at Stamford Bridge. Even though Pedro scored with an overhead kick, the result once again raised questions about Chelsea’s direction under the current ownership. Wright-Phillips feels a player of Pedro’s level should not spend his best years outside the Champions League.
He said: “I believe it would be fantastic for Joao if he were to go. “Personally, given the way Chelsea has been run, if I were him, I would do everything to complete this transfer.” Wright-Phillips also spoke about how well Pedro could fit into Barcelona’s attack alongside Raphinha and Lamine Yamal.
He added: “Playing at Camp Nou, alongside Raphinha and Lamine Yamal, would be great for him. He would score many goals, since we have already seen what he did in a team that wasn’t as good as this Chelsea team.
“If I were Joao Pedro, I would want to play in the Champions League, and I can’t see Chelsea qualifying for any European competition. Joao has the level and deserves to be playing in the Champions League.”
Pedro joined Chelsea from Brighton & Hove Albion in a £60 million deal and signed a contract until 2033. Despite Chelsea’s poor campaign, he has still managed to stand out with important goals and strong performances.
After the loss against Nottingham Forest, Pedro admitted the team had let supporters down. Speaking after the match, he said:
“Everyone needs to look at themselves, me included, to find a way to do better. I feel sorry for the fans. We need to see where we can improve.” Chelsea will next travel to Anfield to face Liverpool FC on Saturday in another huge test for the struggling side.
