“They’re going to grab him”: Jamahal Hill sends warning to Alex Pereira about heavyweight move as UFC history talk grows
Jamahal Hill is sharing an honest warning for Alex Pereira. The former UFC light heavyweight champion recently spoke about Alex Pereira’s idea of moving up to the heavyweight division. Jamahal Hill made it clear that while anything can happen in fighting, heavyweight is a very different world.
Alex Pereira is the current UFC light heavyweight champion and a former UFC middleweight champion. The Brazilian star has openly talked about going up again to chase history and try to win a third UFC belt. But Jamahal Hill believes that jump could bring serious challenges.
Jamahal Hill shared his thoughts during a recent interview with The Schmo. He was asked directly if Alex Pereira should move up to heavyweight. Jamahal Hill said the idea is possible, but far from easy.
“I know he wants a challenge. He wants a money fight. He wants to really get paid,” Jamahal Hill said. “It’s possible, especially after what we’ve seen in the last fight. Tom Aspinall against Ciryl Gane, how effective the jab was, and how Tom Aspinall could be outboxed. But I still think that’s a tough one.”
Jamahal Hill pointed to size and strength as the biggest danger. He reminded people that even at light heavyweight, Alex Pereira has been taken down before.
“That’s a tough ask,” Jamahal Hill said. “They’re going to grab him. Alex Pereira has defended takedowns, but he’s been on the ground at 205. Those big guys at heavyweight, they will just lift him.”
Jamahal Hill knows Alex Pereira well. The two fought at UFC 300 in April 2024, where Alex Pereira stopped Jamahal Hill in the first round to defend his title.
Even after that loss, Jamahal Hill believes the heavyweight division brings a whole new level of physical stress.
Even with the warnings, Jamahal Hill did not close the door on Alex Pereira doing something special. He said the Brazilian’s power always gives him a chance.
“It’s possible,” Jamahal Hill said. “We have to see what’s going on with the heavyweight division. But it’s possible. All it takes is one punch.”
Alex Pereira has built his UFC run on knockout wins and calm pressure. That style has helped him win titles in two divisions already.
Other fighters have also spoken about the risks. Curtis Blaydes recently talked about the wear on Alex Pereira’s body.
“How long has he been active in combat sports? Twenty years? That’s a lot of rounds, a lot of wear and tear,” Curtis Blaydes said.
“They probably want to get the value out of him before his body starts breaking down.” For now, Alex Pereira has not announced any official heavyweight fight.
But with talk growing and champions like Tom Aspinall leading the division, the idea is clearly on the table. And Jamahal Hill’s message is simple. The dream is real, but the danger is just as real.
