Tiger Woods accused of dodging a crucial problem over a U.S. interest as DP World Tour veteran ignites debate

Tiger Woods has been criticized by Bernard Gallacher, a former Ryder Cup captain, for delaying a decision on whether to captain the US team in the 2027 Ryder Cup. 10-time DP World Tour winner Gallacher said that he does not understand why Woods needs time to consider the position. The 15-time major champion is the PGA of America’s preferred choice to captain the US team at Adare Manor in Ireland.

Bernard Gallacher accused Tiger Woods of delaying the captaincy decision

Gallacher stated that most of the players accept the captaincy right away when the opportunity arises. Gallacher told Today’s Golfer, “It would be good for the Ryder Cup if Tiger takes it. But he’s prevaricating quite a lot. Usually, when people are asked to be captains, they say yes straight away, no matter who they are, whether they’re Tiger Woods or not. But he’s not saying that. I don’t know why."

Gallacher also stated that the recent decision allows players to be paid for the event, which could influence Woods’ thinking. “Maybe now that all the players are getting paid, he’ll feel more comfortable captaining his side of players who are getting paid money,” he said.

For years, there has been discussion about Ryder Cup players receiving compensation. Woods was among the athletes who supported discussions about payments in the late 1990s, though he believed the funds should be directed to charities rather than to the players themselves.


Woods said at the time, “It’s never really been about getting paid. It’s how we allocate funds to help our sport or help things that we believe in back home.”

Another reason behind Tiger Woods’ delay could be his current commitments with the PGA Tour. He serves on two tour boards and has been involved in discussions about possible changes to the schedule. Next week, the first plans for a major overhaul of the PGA Tour calendar are expected to be revealed, with Woods reportedly playing a significant role in those discussions.

Tiger Woods recently explained why he has not yet decided on the United States captaincy for the 2027 Ryder Cup. Due to his current involvement in multiple PGA Tour matters, the 82-time PGA Tour champion stated that the decision ultimately comes down to time.
