Track star Nyan Brown speaks out after controversial relay disqualification costs Mallard Creek state title
Mallard Creek track star Nyan Brown has finally spoken after a painful decision at the North Carolina high school state championships left his team without a title many believed they had already won. The shocking moment happened during the boys’ 4x400-meter relay in Greensboro when Brown, running the final leg, raised five fingers just before crossing the finish line. The gesture was meant to celebrate what he thought would be Mallard Creek’s fifth straight state championship. But seconds later, officials disqualified the team for unsportsmanlike conduct. The ruling erased the relay victory and dropped Mallard Creek behind Jordan High School in the final standings. Instead of celebrating a championship, the team walked away heartbroken.
The decision quickly sparked backlash online, with many fans, athletes, and coaches questioning whether the punishment was too harsh. Brown, who had already made headlines earlier in the meet after breaking the state record in the 300-meter hurdles, said he never meant to disrespect anyone. He also claimed other athletes celebrated during the championships without being punished.
In a long message posted on social media, Nyan Brown said the relay race meant everything to him and his teammates because it could have completed a five-year championship run for Mallard Creek.
“That relay mattered deeply to me because a win would have secured our team’s fifth consecutive state championship,” Brown wrote. “I wanted that for my teammates more than anything. They worked incredibly hard for every point this season, and we had seniors on this team who had never experienced winning a state championship.”
Brown also defended his actions and said people who know him understand he has always respected the sport.
“Anyone who has competed against me over the last nine years knows that I have always competed with respect for the sport and respect for my opponents. I would never intentionally taunt another athlete,” he said.
The future NC State athlete explained that emotions were high throughout the meet, especially after his record-breaking hurdles performance. Brown admitted he celebrated loudly after that race too, but said it came from pride and excitement.
“When I crossed the line, my celebration was loud and emotional,” Brown wrote. “I celebrated with my teammate and dapped up my opponent because it was one of the proudest moments of my life on the track.”
Meanwhile, North Carolina High School Athletic Association commissioner Que Tucker defended the officials’ call. In a statement to the Charlotte Observer, Tucker said meet officials made the decision using National Federation of State High School Associations rules regarding unsporting behavior. Mallard Creek has reportedly appealed the ruling, but the controversy continues to divide the track and field community.
