Joe Rogan and Kid Rock are facing strong criticism after comments linked to a disability-related slur sparked debate in New Jersey. Officials say the language is harmful and goes against years of progress made to promote respect. The controversy began when Joe Rogan used the “R-word” during an episode of The Joe Rogan Experience. He described the return of the term as “one of the great culture victories.” Critics quickly reacted, saying the remark ignored the pain such language causes. Soon after, attention also turned to Kid Rock and other public figures who used the same word in recent appearances. New Jersey officials have now stepped forward to respond in clear terms.

Dr. Stephen Cha, commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Human Services, and Kaylee McGuire from the Department of Aging and Disability Services addressed the controversy in a guest column for NJ.com. They reminded readers that in 2010 New Jersey “acted decisively to remove outdated and demeaning terminology from New Jersey statutes and regulations and replace it with respectful, person-first language.”

They warned that the recent use of the slur by well-known personalities threatens that progress. Referring to Rogan’s podcast, they wrote, “On a widely listened episode of ‘The Joe Rogan Experience,’ the host used the slur within seconds of the program’s start, celebrating its return as a cultural win.”

The column also noted, “Musician Kid Rock publicly used the slur on television, and Kanye West used the word during an interview, among many other recent examples.” Officials said such moments encourage the word to return to everyday speech.

Even though lawmakers replaced the term with “intellectual disability” in legal language back in 2010, the word has resurfaced in recent years. Researchers at Montclair State University reported that online use of the slur rose sharply after a Truth Social post in which Donald Trump used the term publicly. According to the study, usage increased by more than 200 percent.

Disability advocacy groups strongly condemned the trend. They described the language as harmful and inhumane and urged public figures to choose respectful words instead.

Joe Rogan is no stranger to controversy. His career has often included bold and provocative opinions. In the past, criticism over offensive remarks even placed his UFC commentary role under scrutiny and led him to apologize publicly. This latest backlash adds another chapter to that history, while also reopening a national conversation about respect, influence, and responsibility in public speech.
