USATF asks World Athletics to review US Half Marathon chaos after Jess McClain, Hurley and Kurgat misdirected

Jess McClain was only a few miles away from a dream moment. The American runner was leading the US Half Marathon Championships in Atlanta and looked ready to win her first national title. But suddenly everything changed. With less than two miles left in the race, the lead vehicle guiding the runners took a wrong turn. McClain and two other frontrunners, Emma Grace Hurley and Ednah Kurgat, followed the car and were led off the official course. By the time they realized the mistake and ran back, the race had slipped away.

The incident quickly caused chaos in the track and field world. Soon after the race, USA Track and Field stepped in and contacted World Athletics. According to USATF CEO Max Siegel, the organization has now asked international officials to review the situation. The final decision could determine whether the affected runners will still get their chance to represent Team USA at the 2026 World Athletics Road Running Championships.

The dramatic moment happened near the end of the US Half Marathon Championships in Atlanta. With less than two miles left, the lead vehicle and police escort moved off the correct route.

Jess McClain, Emma Grace Hurley and Ednah Kurgat were following the guide car and unknowingly ran the wrong way. When they realized the problem, they quickly turned around and sprinted back to the official course. But by then the race order had completely changed.

Because of the delay, McClain finished ninth. Hurley crossed in 12th place, while Kurgat finished 13th.

Meanwhile, Molly Born, who had been more than a minute behind earlier, reached the finish line first with a time of 1:09:43.

Even Born admitted the victory did not feel right. She said, “If a spot on the world team for Copenhagen is offered to me, I do not plan to take it regardless of who it goes to because I did not fairly earn it. Here’s to hoping there can be changes to the rules in this exceptional circumstance so that there may be some justice for the runners who were wronged.”

After the race, the affected athletes filed an official protest and appeal with USA Track and Field. However, both requests were denied.

The appeals jury admitted there had been a problem with the course. Officials stated that the “course was not adequately marked at the point of misdirection.” But they also explained that there was “no recourse within the USATF rulebook to alter the results order of finish.”

Because of the controversy, USATF has now taken the issue to World Athletics.

USATF CEO Max Siegel said in an official statement, “On Monday, we sent an emergency request to World Athletics, outlining what happened.”

He added, “While we had hoped to share the results of this request with everyone today, we have learned the outcome will require a vote by the World Athletics Council.”

According to Siegel, the vote will take place during the World Athletics Council meeting in Poland before the World Indoor Championships on March 18 and 19.

Meanwhile, the Atlanta Track Club has also stepped in to support the runners. Race director Rich Kenah accepted responsibility for the mistake and announced the club would still award the prize money.

Under this decision, Jess McClain will receive the full $20,000 first place prize. Emma Grace Hurley and Ednah Kurgat will share the $12,000 and $7,500 prizes for second and third place.

USATF later praised the Atlanta Track Club for taking quick action. In a statement, the organization said, “We applaud and thank Atlanta Track Club for their decision to pay prize money to the impacted athletes.”

They added, “Atlanta Track Club has been an excellent partner of USA Track and Field and their management of this unfortunate series of events has been handled quickly and professionally.”

For now, the biggest question remains unanswered. The final decision by World Athletics will determine whether McClain, Hurley and Kurgat can still represent Team USA at the 2026 World Athletics Road Running Championships in Copenhagen.
