He described the idea of walking out near the Oval Office, entering the cage with the American flag, and competing on such a historic stage as something he has spoken into existence since his bout with Rafael Fiziev last year.

He explained that his original plan was to fight Topuria earlier in the year and then defend the belt at the White House event. While plans changed due to circumstances beyond his control, Gaethje feels the outcome still favors him. Winning the interim title, in his view, makes him a champion on paper and puts him in a strong position to face Topuria in June.

Topuria’s recent return to training has strengthened Gaethje’s belief. The champion posted a message declaring his comeback alongside training footage. Reports from Marca suggest that Topuria has resolved legal issues with his wife, leading to a dismissed lawsuit. He is now back at his Madrid gym and focused on fighting again.

As one of the biggest MMA stars in 2026, Topuria is seen as a perfect fit to headline the special White House card. Gaethje believes their title unification fight stands above all others. He said he expects them to close the show and finds it hard to imagine a bigger option.

Still, Gaethje remains flexible. He admitted that a fight with Conor McGregor would also make sense. In that scenario, he believes McGregor would headline regardless, and if Topuria did not return, the division could take a very different turn.
