Who is Calli Hauger-Thackery? British runner who ran Boston Marathon while 22 weeks pregnant inspires sporting world

British long-distance runner Calli Hauger-Thackery proved her determination by competing in the Boston Marathon while 22 weeks pregnant. The 33-year-old Olympian took part in the race on April 20 and finished in 2:43:58. She is expecting her first child, a baby boy, with her husband Nick Hauger later this year. Despite the physical challenges, she showed remarkable strength and commitment to her sport.

This was not her first race during pregnancy. Hauger-Thackery had already competed in two marathons earlier, including a victory at the Houston Marathon in January. She explained that continuing to train and compete gave her purpose during pregnancy.

Calli Hauger-Thackery’s Boston Marathon run marked her third marathon during pregnancy. Speaking to Runner's World she said that maintaining training and racing was important for her mindset. She expressed that stopping completely would have felt unusual because competing is a big part of her life. Having goals during pregnancy helped her stay motivated and focused rather than feeling like the months were dragging on.

Reflecting on the race, she explained that the first half was challenging due to discomfort in her right glute, which caused tension and made things difficult. She received medical support during the race and still maintained a strong pace, averaging 6:16 per mile.

The British long-distance runner is known for her strong performances in marathons and track events. She was born on January 9, 1993, in Yorkshire, England. Coming from a sporting family, her mother was a sprinter at county level, while her father was a professional distance runner who helped Great Britain win a team medal at the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships.

She studied at the University of New Mexico, where she built a successful college career. During her time there, she earned multiple All-American honors. She helped her team win several championships, including the NCAA cross country title in 2015. Her development in the United States played a key role in shaping her professional career.

She got fame after she finished fifth in the 5,000 metres at the European Under-23 Championships and later represented England at the Commonwealth Games 2022. She also competed at the European Athletics Championships 2022, where she delivered strong results.

Her breakthrough in marathons came in 2023 when she won the McKirdy Micro Marathon in New York, achieving the Olympic qualifying time. In 2024, she earned a bronze medal at the European Athletics Championships 2024 half marathon and also secured team gold.

She represented Great Britain at the Paris Olympics 2024 marathon, although she could not finish the race. Later that year, she won the California International Marathon with a course record time, confirming her status as one of Britain’s top distance runners.
