Iva Jovic is an 18-year-old American tennis player from California and one of the brightest young faces in U.S. tennis right now. She came into the spotlight at the Australian Open after a strong run that ended against world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in Melbourne. Iva Jovic is an 18-year-old American tennis player who has quickly become a big talking point in world tennis. On Tuesday in Melbourne, her dream run at the Australian Open ended after a tough loss to world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka. Jovic went down 6-3, 6-0 on Rod Laver Arena in very hot conditions.
Even though the loss was one-sided, this match showed how far Jovic has already come at such a young age. She reached the quarterfinals of one of the biggest tennis events in the world and did it with calm body language and fearless tennis. Ranked No. 29 before the match, Jovic had already beaten strong players and proved she belongs at the top level. Facing the defending champion was always going to be a huge test. Aryna Sabalenka’s power and speed gave Jovic very little room to settle. Still, this Australian Open has clearly marked the arrival of America’s newest teen tennis star.
Aryna Sabalenka overpowers Iva Jovic at Australian Open quarterfinal
Playing against Aryna Sabalenka, Iva Jovic struggled to handle the world No. 1’s raw power from the baseline. Jovic fought hard in the first set but lost it 6-3 after several long rallies. In the second set, Sabalenka raised her level even more and raced to a 5-0 lead. She closed out the match 6-0 with ease.
Before this loss, Jovic had impressed fans and experts alike. She defeated Yulia Putintseva and stunned No. 7 seed Jasmine Paolini to reach the last eight. Those wins showed her confidence and ability to stay calm under pressure.
Off the court, Jovic also made headlines for her mature words during a tense time back home in the United States. Speaking to reporters on Saturday, she said, “I hope going forward that we can have a lot more peace in our country and more kindness in the way we speak to each other.”
Iva Jovic, the daughter of Serbian immigrants, has said she looks up to Novak Djokovic. She shared that Djokovic advised her to “open up the court” and “find more width” in her game. That advice helped her earlier in the tournament, though it was not enough against Sabalenka.
Aryna Sabalenka now moves on to the semifinals, while Jovic heads back to the United States with her reputation stronger than ever. After reaching the semifinals in Auckland and the final in Hobart earlier this month, her 2026 season has started at a very fast pace. She may have lost to the best player in the world, but Iva Jovic has clearly announced herself on the global tennis stage.
