Who is Lee Hae-in, the South Korean figure skater heading to the Winter Olympics 2026?

Lee Hae-in is one of South Korea’s most inspiring figure skaters right now. At just 20 years of age, she has secured her first Olympic ticket after finishing second at the national trials. Her reaction on the ice showed how much the moment meant to her. The Milan Olympics will mark a major milestone in her career and will reward her years of hard work.

Lee’s journey to the Olympics has not been easy. Less than two years ago, her skating future was uncertain due to a suspension that kept her away from competition. Through legal battles and personal struggles, she fought her way back. Now, she is preparing to represent South Korea on the biggest stage in figure skating.

Lee Hae-in’s journey from setback to Olympic dream

Lee Hae-in earned her Olympic place by finishing second overall at the two-stage Korean trials. She ranked just behind Shin Ji-a to claim the final spot in women’s singles. At the second leg of the trials, Lee trailed Kim Chae-yeon by 3.66 points. However, she delivered a powerful free skate and scored more than 11 points higher, sealing her place on the Olympic team.

Her success is even more meaningful because of what she went through in recent years. In June 2024, the Korea Skating Union handed Lee a three-year suspension over allegations involving a teammate. Lee challenged the decision in court and won an injunction that paused the ban. The federation later reinstated her in May, giving her a chance to return and compete for Olympic qualification.

After earning her spot, Lee spoke about how grateful she felt. She shared that she never believed she could reach the Winter Olympics and now wants to represent her country in the best way possible. She also explained that her tears on the ice came from relief more than anything else. Finishing the program, hearing fans cheer her name, and knowing she made it through were deeply emotional moments for her.

During her time away from competition, Lee learned important lessons about herself. She focused on staying calm, moving at her own pace, and controlling what she could. Music, writing, and drawing helped her clear her mind. Through it all, her love for figure skating never faded. Being on the ice continued to bring her comfort and motivation.

She wants to fully connect with her routines, skate with confidence, and perform like the experienced senior athlete she has become.
