Shane Hollander, the fictional Canadian hockey player from the popular series “Heated Rivalry,” will not be seen at the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics. But a real athlete with the same name will be there. Sean Hollander, a 25-year-old American luger, has qualified for his second Olympic Games. As the show continues to trend online, Hollander is already preparing for the jokes and attention linked to the name match.

The HBO Max and Crave series has become a major hit since its release. Because of that, Sean Hollander’s name has started to draw interest beyond the sport of luge. He says the comparison does not bother him. Instead, he is choosing to enjoy the moment as he focuses on competing for Team USA on the Olympic stage.

Sean Hollander’s Olympic journey and growing attention

Sean Hollander is from Lake Placid, New York. He is a doubles luge athlete for the United States. He will compete at the Milan Cortina Games after finishing eighth at the Olympic trials with his partner, Zachary DiGregorio. Hollander is no stranger to the Olympics. He also represented Team USA at the Beijing Winter Games in 2022.

“There’s a lot of Shane Hollander jokes going around,” Hollander told NBC News. He said he has not watched the show yet. He also said he has not been stopped in public because of his name. Still, his teammates are enjoying the situation. They have “gotten the biggest kick out of” the similarity and want to make posters about the fictional character during the Games.

“I think it’s hilarious. It’s all in good fun”, Hollander said about the attention.

Hollander has found strong success since Beijing. He and DiGregorio won the World Cup in 2023. They have also earned several medals at major events. This time, Hollander believes they can fight for a podium finish. He said they are “actually competitive in the race.”

He also spoke about jokes linked to his sport. “I mean, the sport that I participate in as well, already has a lot of gay connotations and gay jokes around it, especially during the Olympics, so this, I think, is going to make that tenfold and completely ramp up. Luge always gets the gay jokes at the Olympics because it’s two guys in speed suits lying on top of each other. It’s kind of an easy one”, he said, laughing.

His fiancée, Olympic ski jumper Paige Jones, has also joined the fun. She has posted TikTok videos about having a “Shane Hollander at home.”

Despite the pressure, Hollander remains focused on the upcoming Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics 2026.
