Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom explained that it is too early to give a detailed response about Iran’s participation. He said the finals draw had already taken place in Washington with all qualified teams involved, and the focus remains on delivering a safe tournament where every nation can take part. He added that FIFA will continue discussions with the three host governments to ensure security for everyone involved.

If Iran decides to withdraw before the tournament, they could face heavy financial penalties. According to FIFA regulations, a team that pulls out more than 30 days before the first match can be fined at least $324,000. If the withdrawal happens within 30 days of the opening match, the fine rises to at least $648,000. The country would also need to repay preparation funds and other contributions received from FIFA. Additional disciplinary action could include suspension from future tournaments or replacement by another member association.

Iran are currently placed in Group G alongside Belgium, New Zealand and Egypt, with matches scheduled in Los Angeles and Seattle. If Iran withdraws before the competition begins, FIFA has the authority to nominate a replacement, likely from the Asian Football Confederation. Iraq and the United Arab Emirates could benefit, depending on ongoing qualification play-offs. However, once the tournament starts, no new team can enter. Any withdrawn team’s matches would be forfeited or adjusted under tournament rules.
