World No 1 Jannik Sinner OUT of French Open 2026, suffers shocking collapse after being one game away from victory
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner suffered one of the biggest shocks of the 2026 French Open after crashing out in the second round despite leading by two sets and being just one game away from victory. The Italian star was dominating Juan Manuel Cerundolo on Court Philippe-Chatrier and looked certain to move into the third round with ease. Sinner had taken complete control of the match and was leading 6-3, 6-2, 5-1 before everything suddenly changed in the Paris heat.
Temperatures touched 33 degrees Celsius during the match and Sinner began to struggle physically in the third set. The Italian appeared uncomfortable and lost momentum quickly as Cerundolo started fighting back strongly. Sinner later needed a medical timeout while serving for the match. From that moment, the Argentine completely changed the contest and gave a remarkable comeback. Cerundolo eventually stunned the top seed 3-6, 2-6, 7-6, 6-1, 6-1 to knock him out of Roland Garros in dramatic fashion.
However, the match changed completely late in the third set. Sinner’s movement slowed down as the heat began to affect him badly. While serving for victory, he requested medical treatment and looked physically exhausted. Cerundolo stayed calm and took full advantage of the situation. The Argentine raised his intensity and forced Sinner into longer rallies.
After the medical break, Cerundolo did not lose a single game before taking the third set 7-5. His confidence continued to grow while Sinner struggled to recover physically. The Argentine dominated the fourth set 6-1 and quickly moved ahead 4-0 in the decider with two early breaks of serve.
The Argentine eventually sealed one of the biggest wins of his career and completed a stunning comeback in five sets.
The defeat also created unwanted history for Sinner. He became the first world No. 1 player to lose in the second round of a Grand Slam since Rafael Nadal’s early exit at the 2023 Australian Open.
