Bryce Harper breaks silence on Team USA criticism after WBC loss, sets bold World Series goal with Philadelphia Phillies
Bryce Harper is not looking back anymore. After Team USA’s painful one-run loss to Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic final, the Phillies star has already shifted his focus. With Opening Day just a week away, Harper returned to BayCare Ballpark and made one thing clear that his main goal now is winning the World Series with the Philadelphia Phillies. The disappointment from the WBC still hurts, but Harper is choosing to use it as fuel.
Speaking to Phillies.com, he said, “We’ve been so close as a team. I’ve been so close to the individual players as well. Obviously, that’s the remaining thing on the mantle, right? I think obviously winning a gold medal in the WBC would have been incredible. But winning a World Series trophy is what you play for, what you dream for, and you know, hopefully looking forward to doing that this year.” That shift in mindset comes at the right time. The Phillies are entering a crucial season, and Harper knows this could be another big chance.
On the field, Harper knows where he needs to improve. According to MLB.com, he saw only 43.1% of pitches in the strike zone last season. He also swung at first pitches (0-0 count) 53.8% of the time. This year, better pitch selection and patience will be key if he wants to lead the Phillies deep into October.
The team has come close before. In 2022, they reached the World Series but lost 4-2 to the Houston Astros. Last season, they finished strong with a 96-66 record but fell to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS. Harper himself had a quiet series, batting .200.
At the same time, Harper also spoke strongly in defense of Team USA after WBC criticism. Many fans questioned the players’ commitment, but he pushed back. “I think the worst notion that anybody had of Team USA is that we didn’t care. We don’t care about our country, we didn’t play for our country,” he said.
He added, “Because a guy did not throw, he doesn’t love his country, we don’t care as much. But you gotta respect the parameters of each guy and their season.” His comments, reported by Phillies.com, showed support for players like Tarik Skubal, who had to balance national duty with their MLB careers.
Now, with the WBC behind him and criticism addressed, Harper is locked in. The message is simple, this season is about one thing, and one thing only: bringing a World Series trophy to Philadelphia.

Harper’s focus on the World Series also comes after a season where questions were raised about his form. Phillies president Dave Dombrowski openly said, “He didn’t have an elite season like he has in the past. I guess we only find out if he becomes elite [again] or he continues to be good.” Those words did not sit well with Harper. He later admitted, “I don’t get motivated by that kind of stuff. For me, it was wild the whole situation of that happening.” Still, team owner John Middleton confirmed the issue has now been resolved. On the field, Harper knows where he needs to improve.
