Daniel Schneemann home run sparks MLB outrage after man snatches baseball from crying young girl
A tense moment during the game between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Cleveland Guardians quickly turned into one of the most talked-about baseball clips online. During the fifth inning, Daniel Schneemann hit a two-run home run to right field, but instead of fans celebrating the shot, attention shifted to what happened in the stands.
A grown man and a young girl both went for the ball after it bounced loose. The girl ran down the steps hoping to grab the souvenir, but the man reached down, took it first, and then raised it in celebration before returning to his seat. The girl was left upset, and the video spread fast on social media, with many fans calling the moment embarrassing and unfair.
The moment was also shown live on the Rays broadcast, and even the announcers were surprised by what they saw. Play-by-play announcer Andy Freed reacted immediately and said, “No! He is not going to steal that!”
Color commentator Brian Anderson quickly added, “Yeah, that cannot happen.”
Fans online were just as upset. One person wrote, “As many games I have gone to in my MLB life, I have never caught a ball but I would never steal the opportunity from a kid. Pathetic response from the guy.”
Another posted, “Imagine celebrating after you wrestle a little girl for a baseball. That is an all-time bad move.”
Thankfully, the story did not end there. Rays sideline reporter Ryan Bass saw what happened and decided to help. He walked up to the section where the girl was sitting and gave both her and her younger brother a baseball. The girl was seen crying as he handed them over.
Later, Bass posted on social media, “Just exercising all of that bonus girl dad energy.”
During a commercial break, the Rays broadcast team also noticed the girl’s younger brother bravely walk over to the man and ask for the ball back for his sister.
Later that night, the girl’s mother, Nikki DeVore, shared on Facebook that the man eventually returned the home run ball several innings later.
She wrote, “The pressure resulted in the man giving her the home run ball back four to five innings later towards the end of the game. It was not the same but we appreciated him doing the right thing.”
She also thanked Tampa’s broadcast crew and fans for supporting her daughter and helping turn a painful moment into a happy ending.
