Inside the love story Mookie Betts shares with his high school sweetheart Brianna Hammonds
Long before packed ballparks and October pressure became routine, Mookie Betts lived a much quieter life. There were school corridors, casual conversations, and a future that had not yet announced itself. In that early chapter stood Brianna Hammonds, not as a public figure, but as someone who would become deeply woven into his life. Their relationship began before success entered the picture, shaped by time rather than attention.
That early start continues to define them. As Betts builds one of the most consistent careers in Major League Baseball, Hammonds remains a familiar presence beside him. Their story has never relied on spectacle. Instead, it has unfolded steadily, marked by shared growth, family milestones, and years of trust that predate fame.
Betts and Hammonds first met in middle school, when she was in seventh grade and he was in eighth. The moment was unremarkable at the time. Hammonds once recalled that one of her closest friends had a crush on Betts and encouraged her to speak to him. When hesitation took over, Hammonds stepped in, unknowingly setting the stage for her own future.
Betts noticed her, but romance was not his focus. Sports and video games filled his days. It took months for him to gather the courage to ask her out. The first attempt did not work. The second one did.
“When I finally asked her out, she said she didn’t hear me, but she heard me…So the next day I end up asking her again,” Betts once said. “I’m thinking, You get one shot. I only have but so much courage, I’m pacing in my room and thinking, I ain’t asking again. I don’t know what [made] me ask again. She said yes and my MySpace status changed.”
That simple yes carried forward. While many teenage relationships fade with time, theirs grew stronger. As Betts’ baseball career began to take shape, Hammonds remained steady. He was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in 2011 and made his MLB debut in 2014. Success followed quickly, but familiarity never left.
“Brianna has been by my side since we were teenagers,” Betts told PEOPLE after their engagement. “Together we’ve grown mentally, physically and spiritually. She is my best friend.”
Their family story began before marriage. In November 2018, shortly after Betts won his first World Series with the Red Sox, Hammonds gave birth to their daughter, Kynlee Ivory Betts. The moment shifted his perspective. Baseball achievements continued, but life felt larger.
Marriage came later, on their own terms. In January 2021, Betts arranged what appeared to be an awards dinner in Nashville. Surrounded by close family and friends, he read Hammonds a personal poem and proposed.
“Winning another World Series was great, but putting a ring on my MVP is the real blessing! I am a blessed man,” Betts said afterward. They married on December 1, 2021, in Rancho Palos Verdes, California. Their daughter served as the flower girl. Music and celebration filled the night. In April 2023, their son, Kaj Lynn Betts, was born.
Today, as Betts continues to compete at the highest level, Hammonds remains where she has always been. Beside him. Their love story stands out not for its noise, but for its longevity. Built early. Lived fully. Still growing.
