Alex Bregman had turned down a six-year, $171.5 million offer from Detroit last winter before signing a three-year deal in Boston. Since opting out, he has also drawn interest from the Toronto Blue Jays, Chicago Cubs, and the Red Sox, who have not ruled out a reunion.

On Sunday, January 5, MLB insider Francys Romero reported that the San Diego Padres, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Los Angeles Angels have all shown strong interest in the Japanese infielder.

Kazuma Okamoto is coming off a standout 2025 season in Japan, where he hit .327 with a .416 on-base percentage and a .598 slugging percentage in 69 games.

Scouts like his power, plate discipline, and ability to play multiple infield spots. One international scout told Francys Romero, “He’s ready for MLB pitching right now.”

Teams must act fast. Kazuma Okamoto’s posting window closes on January 4, meaning clubs are racing to finalize evaluations and offers. For teams like Pittsburgh and San Diego, his versatility and cost control make him a strong fit.
