There are birthdays, and then there are
Yu Darvish kind of birthdays. Kodai Senga, the talented right-hander from Japan, just experienced the latter, thanks to none other than his fellow countryman and MLB star, Yu Darvish of the San Diego Padres.
Big Leagues, Bigger Gifts: Darvish and Senga’s Bond Goes Beyond the Mound
Senga celebrated his 32nd birthday on January 30th, having a little surprise as he had no idea that his day would come so stylishly. Most people receive socks or cake, and sometimes a meme from friends, but Senga got a Louis Vuitton bag, worth a cool $3350. Now that's a really stylish way to start up the year. Darvish posted a picture of the two of them training in San Diego, and the gift came from him. In true modest fashion, Senga couldn't help but share his thanks with his Instagram followers: "Spent some time with Mr. Darvish in San Diego. I received a warm welcome with birthday wishes, thank you for another year. I look so small with Mr Dar. “ It's not every day a pitcher gets a birthday bag from an MLB legend-least of all one who is as fashionable as Darvish.
However, that was not all the celebration. The pictures on Senga's Instagram did not just show what was in that flaunting gift but also revealed glimpses of the pitchers' training sessions, as one would expect: tuning up the Japanese star for what promises to be a very exciting season with the New York Mets.
Coming to Darvish—don't be fooled by the flashy gift---because he has quietly built an incredible working career of his own. Darvish, who has been one of the most outstanding pitchers for the Padres, has placed a legacy into the entire Major League Baseball with a mixture of intelligent pitching and an irresistible impression. The Japanese ace, at 37, has been the anchor of the Padres' rotation since his arrival, and his career has been stellar. Be it no-hitters, All-star selections, or mentoring the next generation of pitchers (like Senga), Darvish continues to be a force.
Darvish is not only a teammate for Senga but also a mentor as he goes through the swings of adjusting to MLB life. Even if Senga claims that he feels "small" by the side of Darvish, it's apparent that he is taking on stature on the field and in the hearts of Mets fans everywhere.
As Senga prepares for a new season yet again, maybe not far off will be the year of his breakout. With Darvish behind him, it's hard to say what's next for Queens' rising star. And let's face it if his gifts keep on coming like these; he might just start a trend of luxury handbags in MLB clubhouses everywhere.
