Report: MLB commissioner Rob Manfred acknowledges talks on in-season tournament, split season
MLB commissioner Rob Manfred has noted there would need to be great interest before an in-season tournament happens, and that there are no plans to change the structure of its regular season. They have all entertained this thought here and there. In an interview given last week on a radio show, Manfred offered naked comments on the league's efforts to assess how the game can develop without sacrificing the tradition.
The comments made by the commissioner, however, were followed by no formal proposals being put forth, which was a rare show of transparency from league leadership. Even if major changes will remain hypothetical for now, the confirmation that ideas such as have been discussed indicate MLB’s greater willingness to explore ways to generate competitive interest over a grueling 162 contests.
The commissioner also mentioned a split season, in which the schedule would be divided into two parts with different standings or qualification consequences for each one. But he said baseball’s complicated calendar, which is interconnected with season-long statistics and records, makes any effort to reshape it “extremely tricky.” He reiterated that ensuring the integrity of the sport's history is always at the heart of the conversations.
Such a change would be subject to years of negotiations with the MLB Players Association and must ultimately be approved by team owners. Travel, financial, and scheduling exigencies would be part of the equation. Ultimately, his recognition means that MLB management is still looking at how to change the game, without changing what the game is. But as of right now, Manfred seems a bit slow to jump into immediate reform.

What Rob Manfred said about an in-season tournament and split season
MLB has discussed both an in-season tournament and a split-season concept, and Manfred said both ideas could be characterized as exploratory as opposed to having actual plans afoot. An in-season tournament would be a new (and separate) competition from the regular season, but could add extra incentives for teams and different storylines during the summer. After some attention on similar formats in other professional sports, baseball's season still provides for other unique challenges on a daily schedule. The commissioner also mentioned a split season, in which the schedule would be divided into two parts with different standings or qualification consequences for each one. Potential impact on Major League Baseball’s long-term direction
Opinion among fans and analysts about Manfred’s comments has been a mixed bag. While some say groundbreaking formats could increase interest, especially in those sections of the calendar that have traditionally struggled to attract viewers. Some fear that changing the 162-game season will diminish the significance of historic records and rivalries that are a big part of the fabric of the sport.Such a change would be subject to years of negotiations with the MLB Players Association and must ultimately be approved by team owners.
