"This is my childhood club": Philadelphia Phillies’ $95 million All-Star drops hint on upcoming free agency decision

Phillies pitcher Ranger Suárez, approaching free agency in 2026, ... Read More
With Ranger Suárez hitting free agency after the 2025 season, the Phillies pitcher wants to stay in Philadelphia. Suárez, who signed a one-year, $8.8 million deal to avoid arbitration for the 2025 season, will hit the open market in 2026.

Suárez's commitment and dedication to the Phillies

Some recent words from Ranger Suárez show his commitment to the Phillies organization as a whole. Through a team interpreter on On Pattinson, he remarked, "This is my childhood club, my childhood organization. All I think about is staying here. I want to pitch here for the rest of my career." Such feelings underscore his deep relationship with the team that signed him in 2012, when he was an international free agent.

Agent representation and contract discussions

Ranger Suárez signed with the Boras Corporation, headed by the famous Scott Boras, in December 2024. This move shows a strategic long-term model for his impending free agency, considering Boras is a well-known agent who makes big-money deals for his players. Still, Suárez's public statements appear to favor staying in Philadelphia.

Suárez’s value hasn’t gone unnoticed by the Phillies’ front office. President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski said it was a topic they'd be open to discussing, adding, "We like Ranger a lot. We liked the Ranger of the first half of the season better than the second half.” That illustrates the organization has seen enough out of Suárez to know he can help.

Performance and future prospects of Ranger Suárez

Ranger Suárez has been impressive, particularly in the early portion of the 2024 season where he won March/April's N.L. Pitcher of the Month. In that stretch, he won all six of his starts, posting a 0.63 WHIP and a 1.32 ERA over 41 innings, including a complete-game shutout of the Colorado Rockies.

Suárez’s performance as the 2025 season unfolds will be one for the Phillies and other teams to keep their eyes on ahead of his eventual free agency. A deep commitment to Philadelphia on the player's part and an agent known for huge contracts leads to interesting conversations. The Phillies will need to weigh their desire to retain a homegrown talent against the financial implications of a potential long-term contract.
