The Toronto Blue Jays are heading into the 2026 MLB season with big expectations, but also big problems. After reaching the World Series last year, many thought this team would again be a strong playoff side. But now, injuries have changed the mood. Young pitcher Trey Yesavage is dealing with a shoulder issue, while Jose Berrios and Anthony Santander are also expected to miss time. Because of this, MLB insider Anthony Castrovince has made a surprising call. Writing on MLB.com on Thursday, he said the Blue Jays might not even reach the playoffs this season, even after their recent success.
Anthony Castrovince questions Toronto Blue Jays depth as Trey Yesavage injury adds pressure on pitching staff
Anthony Castrovince did not hold back while sharing his view. He pointed out that teams that reach the World Series often struggle the next year. He wrote, “It’s unfortunately not only common for a pennant winner one year to miss the playoffs the next; it’s happened 15 times in the Wild Card era. So, apologies, Toronto, but you’re out. It’s nothing personal. And it’s not an unreasonable take, either.”
He did praise the Blue Jays for building a strong pitching group, but he also made it clear that things could fall apart quickly. The biggest concern is Trey Yesavage. The young pitcher is dealing with a shoulder impingement, and if that does not improve, it could hurt the team badly.
Castrovince also raised other worries. He said if Dylan Cease does not return to his best level, if Kevin Gausman starts to slow down with age, and if Jeff Hoffman struggles in the closer role, then the AL East could become very tough for Toronto. He also mentioned a key roster move, saying, “The Blue Jays basically traded one of the best pure hitters in the sport in Bo Bichette for a much iffier commodity in Kazuma Okamoto.”
Trey Yesavage strong rookie run and Toronto Blue Jays honor Buck Martinez with Hall of Excellence induction
Even with the current injury concern, Trey Yesavage showed how special he can be last season. The 22-year-old made his debut late in September but quickly became one of the biggest stories in the playoffs. In Game 2 of the ALDS against the New York Yankees, he recorded 11 strikeouts and did not allow a single run in 5 1/3 innings.
That performance set a Blue Jays postseason record. He also became the second-youngest player in MLB history to record at least 10 strikeouts in a playoff game, just behind Fernando Valenzuela. He continued that form in the World Series. In Game 5, he picked up 12 strikeouts. With that, he became the first rookie in MLB history to have multiple 10-strikeout games in a single postseason.
Away from the field, the team also shared an important update. The Blue Jays announced that Buck Martinez will be inducted into the team’s Hall of Excellence on August 29, 2026. Martinez played for the team from 1981 to 1986 before moving into broadcasting. He later managed the team in 2001 and 2002 and became a well-known voice as a play-by-play announcer in 2010. He officially announced his retirement on February 6.
