Javelin prospect Sachin Yadav seeking Tokyo World Championships berth
RANCHI: All eyes will be on Sachin Yadav, Indian javelin’s next big thing, as the third leg of the Indian Open Athletics gets underway here on Thursday.
Despite suffering an ankle injury, the six-feet-five, 25-year-old from Uttar Pradesh set a new meet record with a throw of 84.39m during the National Games earlier this year. It helped him become the fourth-best thrower in the world this year and also become the fifth-best thrower in the country behind Neeraj Chopra, Kishore Jena, Shivpal Singh and Davinder Singh.

Yadav’s next aim is to go past the 85m mark and qualify for the World Championships in Tokyo this September. While he is making a comeback from a minor injury, the doctor treating it is confident that he is fit and raring to go.
“Yadav is physically completely fit and doesn’t have any injury. He had some stiffness in his shoulder and a pinching pain, but it’s all fine now,” said Dr. Vipin Kumar.
Meanwhile, another young star who will be looking to put in a solid performance is Punjab’s discus-thrower Amanat Kamboj, a silver medalist at last year’s Asian U-20 Athletics Championships. Although she is the only participant in the event, Amanat will look to better her personal best of 52.89m, achieved during the National Junior Championships at Kalinga Stadium last December.
In addition to the youngsters, several veterans too will be competing to qualify for the Federation Cup later this month in Kochi. Among them is former 100m national record holder Amiya Kumar Mallick. Of late, the Odisha sprinter has been a regular in the state’s 4x100m relay team, but he hasn’t been able to perform as expected individually. At last year’s National Open Athletics in Bengaluru, Mallick was disqualified, while in the National Games in Goa in 2023, he finished a disappointing 7th. Also, Srabani Nanda from Odisha will be eyeing the 100-200m double.

He has performed below par in the meet . He could throw only 70 metre . For me the concern point is if in one meet u throw 84 metre , then how come you be so far from your that throw in the next meet . I think consistency in important . Same was the problem with JENA . After the asian games , he hardly came close to it in any of the meets .Read allPost comment
